Sheffield, I love you…

I've been taking photos of things I like around Sheffield for a while. I've lived here all my life, and still find interesting bits I've never come across. Everything from old signage, quirky type, ghost signs, street-art, interesting letterboxes and just things that make me smile — a real random mix of images.

Finding these hidden beauties is what inspired us to create Why U Reading This For and even inspired us to create typefaces. We never know where inspiration for a new project will come from, but give me an old industrial estate or derelict warehouse over a fancy design blog any day.

sheffieldtype_woolensigns

Beautiful old neon sign.

sheffieldtype_albyn

Nice hand lettered sign — particularity like the lowercase 'n'.

sheffieldtype_alfred

Stunner.

sheffieldtype_globesteel

Before VR, there was 3D signage.

sheffieldtype_royal

Funky bar on the 'A'.

sheffieldtype_works

I'm a big fan of the old broken neon signs you find, especially around the old industrial areas.

sheffieldtype_wednesday

Sheffield's greatest.

sheffieldtype_pondsforge

Lovely letterforms.

sheffieldtype_hotel

Script type + Mock Tudor = Great signage.

sheffieldtype_conquest

I always wondered who took the O and E.

sheffieldtype_sheffield

Drop shadow text is back.

sheffieldtype_ampersand

Beautiful letters.

sheffieldtype_harrow

Quirky sign on and old pub near the studio. The bird shit elevates it to another level.

sheffieldtype_hinges

Bold, simple and industrial. Coming to a coffee shop near you soon...

sheffieldtype_bros

Missing G this time.

sheffieldtype_georgebarnsley

Lovely hand lettered gate in Kelham. Plus some shit graffiti.

sheffieldtype_flatshouses

If in doubt use as many fonts as possible.

sheffieldtype_boxing

The only door I've seen made entirely from black marker and Tipp-Ex.

sheffieldtype_steelforage

Don't know who did this, but I like a pun.

sheffieldtype_sadacca

S.A.D.A.C.C.A is Sheffield And District African Caribbean Community Association. Look at those crazy A's and Pac-Man inspired C's!

sheffieldtype_reservedparking

I love DIY signs and messages. The British public love nothing more than ensuring other people NEVER PARK WHERE THEY SHOULDN'T.

sheffieldtype_privateparking2

This obviously took someone a fair amount of time to do. Who needs a top margin? Not this car park.

sheffieldtype_noparking9

Don't ask me why, but I like No Parking signs.

sheffieldtype_noparking8

Sometimes words aren't enough...

sheffieldtype_noparking7

Nice stencil.

sheffieldtype_noparking6

Nice stencil mk2.

sheffieldtype_noparking5

NO!

sheffieldtype_noparking3

Things look better when they're a bit battered.

sheffieldtype_noparking2

Manners go a long way.

sheffieldtype_noparking1

Unusual 'N'.

sheffieldtype_privateparking

This sign has been on this garage since I was a young'un.

sheffieldtype_noparking4

Effects > Gaussian Blur.

sheffieldtype_privatebarking

Woof woof.

sheffieldtype_loadingbay

Why can't all signs be hand painted?

sheffieldtype_politenotice

More good use of manners.

sheffieldtype_nursery2

Finding stuff like this stuck on walls brightens a dull day.

sheffieldtype_nursery1

And this.

sheffieldtype_warning

People wondered why I was taking a photo of this...

sheffieldtype_mindyouhead

DIY health and safety.

sheffieldtype_cargents

You've not owned a car, until you've had a Mondeo with a Gents loo sign stuck to the drivers door.

sheffieldtype_consultus

Wonderful use of language.

sheffieldtype_privateparking3

Retro sign near our studio. Lovely colours.

sheffieldtype_weareoverthere

Proper way-finding.

sheffieldtype_nobull

Skills? Dresses? Pits? What is it!?

sheffieldtype_darkside

Something about Star Wars.

sheffieldtype_cat

Sneaky cat.

sheffieldtype_grillface

The grills have eyes.

sheffieldtype_fedup

Fed up.

sheffieldtype_wink

He looks like he's just done something sinister.

sheffieldtype_grafitti2

Rotherham Type Tour

Welcome to Type Tours. We're usually pretty busy and don’t manage to get out of the studio much but when we do we always find time to hunt down a bit of local typography.

1. Arctic Monkeys covering Drake's 'Hold On, We're Going Home'
